Five-Run Inning Gives UT an 8-4 Win Over Baseball

Nashville, Tenn. — The Tennessee Volunteers took advantage of a five-hit, five run seventh inning to come from behind to defeat the Commodores 8-4 Friday in front of a sellout crowd at Charles Hawkins Field in Southeastern Conference action.

Luke Hochevar earned the win improving to 9-2 on the season. Hochever gave up three runs (one earned) on eight hits in 7.2 innings. Jensen Lewis picked up the loss (6-2) going 6.1 innings giving up five runs (four earned) on a season-high nine hits.

UT outhit Vanderbilt, 12-8, and committed five errors in the game. Michael Rivera totaled three hits in the contest.

After two scoreless innings that saw a pickoff by both teams, the Commodores got on the board in the third. With one away, Rucker Taylor singled with a one-hopper over the third baseman and moved to second when left fielder Julio Borbon over ran the ball. Taylor moved to third when Hochever’s pitch bounced in front of the plate and by catcher J.P. Arencibia. Stephen Shao then hit a high fly ball to left field that swirled in the wind and went off the glove of left fielder Julio Borbon scoring Taylor for a 1-0 Vanderbilt lead.

Brian Hernandez led off the fourth inning with a double off the left field wall and scored on a Dominic de la Osa single to left field scoring Hernandez to give the Commodores a two-run lead.

The Volunteers tied the game at two in the fifth inning. Michael Rivera reached on a wild pitch by Lewis after he struck out. Rivera moved to second when Eric King drew a walk. Suarez laid a sacrifice bunt down the first baseline moving Rivera to third and King to second. Josh Alley then reached on an error by the shortstop when Taylor couldn’t get the ball out of his glove scoring Rivera. Borbon then reached on a fielder’s choice to shortstop that scored King and forced Alley out at second.

Vanderbilt regained the lead in the fifth inning. With one away, Baxter hit a double to centerfield and moved to third when Jones flied out to right field. Hernandez walked and Mansolino reached on an error by third baseman Chase Headley who could not hold on the ball scoring Baxter. Hernandez and Mansolino advanced on a passed ball and with runners on second and third, Hochever struck out de la Osa.

Tennessee took advantage of five hits in the seventh inning scoring five runs to take a 7-3 lead. Josh Alley singled up the middle with one away followed by a Julio Borbon single over the shortstop moving Alley to second.. Headley singled to left field scoring Alley to tie the game at 3-3. With runners at first and second with one away, Ryan Rote came in relief for Lewis and walked Org to load the bases. Arencibia took a 3-2 pitch up the middle scoring Borbon and Headley giving Tennessee its first lead of the game, 5-3. Org and Arencibia advanced on a wild pitch and Edmundson loaded the bases after being hit by reliever Stephen Shao. Shao struck out Rivera and with two away, King hit a ground rule double down the left field line scoring Org and Arencibia. Suarez grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.

Mansolino took the first pitch in the eighth inning and singled to left field. He moved to third when de la Osa singled to center field. After Hocehver struck out Richardson, Daniel Beasley came in relief and forced the next two batters out stranding runners at first and second.

The Vols added one in the top of the ninth when Edmundson scored on a Rivera double.

De la Osa was the only Commodore with multiple hits going 3-4 at the plate with one RBI.

Rote faced two batters in the seventh and gave up two runs on one hit while walking one. Shao finished the game for the Commodores giving up one run on two hits in 2.2 innings. He struck out one.

Vanderbilt is now 25-12, 7-9 in the SEC, while Tennessee is 28-10, 10-5.

The Commodores and Volunteers play Saturday at 6 pm CT at Hawkins Field and the game will be televised by CSS. Junior left-hander Ryan Mullins is on the mound for the Commodores.
