Dores Fall in SEC Tourney Opener 4/21/2005 ATHENS, GA — Eleventh rated Kentucky defeated No. 37 Vanderbilt, 4-0, in the opening round of the Southeastern Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament Thursday evening. The loss dropped the Commodores’ record to 12-10 while the Wildcats improved to 19-8. Kentucky took the doubles point at the No. 2 spot where UK’s Nate Emge and Alex Hume edged by Andy Mack and Nathan Sachs of Vanderbilt, 8-6. That came on the heels of the Commodores’ Ryan Preston and Evan Dufaux beating Wildcats Marcus Sundh and Nolan Poiley by an 8-6 margin. Sixth rated doubles tandem Jesse Witten and Tigran Martiosyan dropped Jason Pinsky and Scott Brown of Vandy, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. Moving to singles play, Kentucky won at No. 2, No. 6 and No. 4 to claim the victory. At No. 2, Hune decisioned Pinsky, 6-4, 6-0 while at No. 6, Polley beat Dufaux by a 7-5, 6-2 margin. The deciding match came at No. 4 where Martirosyan won a three setter against Preston, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. In singles action left incomplete by the match point, Scott Brown was trailing Witten in the third set of their battle at No. 1. Brown won the first set, 7-6 but lost 6-0 in the second and was down 3-1 in the third. At No. 3, Commodore veteran Matt Lockin had won the first set over Emge, 6-4 but was trailing 5-4 in the second. Vanderbilt’s Nathan Sachs was on the verge of winning at No. 5 singles over Matt Emery, 5-7, 6-2, 5-2. |
