Vanderbilt’s outgoing seniors won six of the nine student-athlete awards distributed at the 2004-05 Commodore Men’s Basketball banquet Sunday at the Vanderbilt Stadium Club.

Jason Holwerda, Dawid Przybyszewski and Corey Smith each received the Captains award. Przybyszewski claimed the team’s Scholar Athlete award. Holwerda also was recognized with the Leadership and Coaches’ awards. Smith also earned the Defensive Player of the Year and the Most Valuable Player awards.

Holwerda, Przybyszewski and Smith helped the Commodores to 43 wins during the past two seasons and three postseason appearances during their tenure (the 2002 and 2005 National Invitation Tournament and the 2004 NCAA Tournament).

Holwerda finished his career ranked among the school’s Top 10 leaders in career assists (313) and steals (138). Przybyszewski ended his career with 131 3-pointers, the most among any seven-footer in the NCAA. Smith enjoyed his best campaign as a senior (12.0 points and 4.2 rebounds) and will be remembered for his game-deciding layups against North Carolina State in the 2004 NCAA Tournament and against Wichita State in the 2005 NIT.

Junior Mario Moore won the team’s Assist award, averaging 3.7 per game. Junior Julian Terrell received the team’s Rebounding award, grabbing 5.1 per game. Shan Foster claimed the Most Improved Player award. The freshman ranked third on the team in scoring during the 2004-05 campaign with 9.2 points per game.

Also honored at the banquet was Vanderbilt Assistant Vice Chancellor Brock Williams who received the Ken Hudgens Award for his dedication and spirit for the Vanderbilt men’s basketball program.

Vanderbilt finished the 2004-05 season with a 20-14 overall record and 8-8 mark in the Southeastern Conference. The Commodores advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NIT.
