Brady Fifth, VU Ninth at SEC Golf 4/17/2005 TUNICA, MS—Vanderbilt’s Chris Brady cruised to her best round of the Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Tournament Sunday to help the Commodores into a ninth place finish. Brady, who finished fourth in this event last year as a freshman, crafted a three-under par 69, propelling her from 26th position into a fifth place tie in the final individual standings. She ended up nine-over par. Brady, who had battled the flu early in the tournament and had sagged during the second nines of previous rounds, finished with a flurry Sunday. Starting on No. 10, the Greensboro, N.C. product toured her first nine with eight pars and a deuce on the par 3 13th. She added seven more pars to birdies on par 4 fifth and ninth holes to finish bogey-free for the day. It was an incredibly tight team race for the title with Auburn and Georgia in a play-off. The two squads had tied at 40-over par with no less than three other teams two shots back. Stacy Lewis of Arkansas easily claimed medalist honors on the strength of a five-under 67, the tournament’s best single round. Florida’s Whitney Myers was second, four-over par and six shots back. Vanderbilt’s Kristen Svicarovich shot 77 Sunday, giving her an 11-over 227 total and a tie for 14th place. Other Commodore results included a 78 by Julie Bartholomew, a 79 by Liebelei Lawrence and an 82 by Helen-Rose Richards. “I was very proud of Chris and Kristen,” Coach Martha Richards Freitag said. “Chris had a good practice session after her Saturday round, then hit a lot of greens today and gave herself plenty of chances. I was impressed with the fight and composure displayed by Kristen. Our freshmen all showed signs of being so close to having the kinds of rounds we need to get over the hump.” The Commodores will now await the announcement April 25 of the NCAA Tournament Field. They are in strong contention for a berth in the East Regional field. This week the Southeastern Conference coaches will vote on a variety of post-season awards. Brady and Svicarovich should be in the mix for some of those. Complete tournament results, including the results of the team play-off, are on www.golfstatresults.com. |
