Svicarovich, Brady Keep VU in SEC Pack

4/15/2005

TUNICA, MS–Sophomores Kristen Svicarovich and Chris Brady had solid rounds Friday as defending champion Vanderbilt found itself just nine shots out of second place at the Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Tournament.

Svicarovich put together sides of 36-39 for a three-over par 75 while Brady overcame illness and a sluggish start to post a 76. Vanderbilt is in eighth position at 20-over par as a team, but just nine shots behind second place Tennessee in a tightly bunched field.  Auburn held a commanding eight stroke lead at three-over par 291. Nicole Hage of Auburn shot three-under 69 to hold a two shot lead over Tennessee’s Jessica Shepley. Julie Bartholomew led Vanderbilt’s freshman trio with a 78 while Liebelei Lawrence had 79 and Helen-Rose Richards shot 83. Head Coach Martha Richards Freitag had said before the tournament that a top six finish would be “a good goal” for her young team.  She was encouraged after Friday’s round.

“Kristen had a good start and Chris Brady did a good job despite battling the affects of the stomach flu since yesterday’s practice round,” Freitag said.  “Chris will play better as she gets her strength back.”

“I saw a lot of good shots,” Freitag continued, “and we fought hard and had a good mindset.  It’s a tight field so a shot here or there makes a difference.”

Svicarovich was even par after 12 after a pair of birdies offset two bogeys on the front side. However, she suffered bogeys on the par 3 13th and the par four 15th and 18th holes.

Brady started with bogeys on 1 and 3 before settling down to steady par golf.  Her bogey 5 on number 14 and a bogey on the par 4 17th were the only blemishes on her scorecard after that. Play continues Saturday and Sunday.  The championship is being played at the Tunica National Golf & Tennis Club. Admission is free.
