4/13/2005

Senior Ashley Earley was the recipient of the Commodore Award, presented to the Most Valuable Player of the women’s basketball team, at the team’s annual awards banquet Tuesday night.

Earley helped lead the Commodores to a 24-8 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. She was a First Team All-SEC selection and WBCA Region 3 Kodak All-American. She also was a candidate for the Naismith Trophy and John R. Wooden Award. Earley led the team averaging 18.4 points per game and 9.4 rebounds while posting 14 double-doubles.

Fellow senior Abi Ramsey was selected as the team’s outstanding defensive player. Ramsey recorded 60 steals and played up front in Vandy’s match-up zone.

Others honored at the banquet included Caroline Williams of Rockmart, Ga., who was chosen as the most improved player. Williams led the SEC in three-point field goal percentage.

Sophomore Cherish Stringield of Wakefield, Va., was presented with the Chloe Stroop Spirit Award, and Earley and junior Erica Grimaldi were co-recipients of the Bedford Hunter Loyalty Award.  Both awards were named in honor of dedicated, long-time Commodore fans.
