Georgia Trips Dores 5-2 4/10/2005 The No. 8 Georgia Bulldogs took the doubles point and four singles matches to knock off the homestanding No. 54 Vanderbilt Commodores, 5-2 at the Currey Tennis Center. In doubles action, the Bulldogs claimed the doubles point with victories at the second and third positions. At No. 1 VU’s top combo of Scott Brown and Jason Pinsky captured the lone Commodore win of the doubles draw with a tight 9-8 (5) triumph over UGA’s No. 2 pairing of John Isner and Antonio Ruiz. In the singles draw, the Dawgs took a 2-0 advantage with Ricardo Gonzalez’s win at the No. 6 position. Gonzalez claimed the match, 6-4, 6-3. UGA’s Matic Omerzel pushed the Bulldogs to within one point of the win with his showing over VU’s Matt Lockin. Omerzel took the matchup in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Georgia clinched the showdown at No. 2 where John Isner tripped VU’s Pinsky, 6-4, 6-4. The Dawgs added their fifth point of the afternoon at the fourth slot. UGA’s Colin Purcell dropped VU’s Nathan Sachs in a third set thriller, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (9). VU’s rookie Ryan Preston nabbed the first Commodore point of the day at the fifth spot. Preston outlasted Strahinja Bobusic, 10-6 in the third set tiebreaker to nab his 16th win of 2005. Vanderbilt’s Brown added the second Commodore tally of the day at the first position with his three-set victory over Antonio Ruiz, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. With the win, Brown matches Preston with 16 wins thus far in 2005. Friday’s matchup with Kentucky represents Senior Day for the Dores. The showdown with the Wildcats is slated for Friday at 2:00 p.m. Doubles |
