Women’s Tennis Faces Crucial Weekend 4/7/2005 The No. 6 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team faces yet another critical weekend of SEC play with matches at No. 4 Georgia and No. 23 Tennessee on Friday and Sunday. The Dores first contest comes with Tennessee in Knoxville on Friday. UT currently holds a record of 12-6, 5-3 SEC. In their last weekend, UT posted a 5-2 victory over No. 25 South Carolina on Friday, but fell to the No. 7 Florida Gators by the same tally in Knoxville on Sunday. Head Coach Geoff Macdonald’s Dores knocked off Tennessee twice last year, including a 4-1 triumph in the NCAA Tournament. “A UT/Vandy match is just a great match,” said Macdonald. “We are playing great teams in their home stadiums and we are excited about the opportunity.” In its second test of the weekend, the Commodores travel to Athens, Ga. on Sunday for a date with the Bulldogs. The No. 4 Bulldogs own a 13-3, 7-1 SEC record thus far in 2005. UGA is coming off a weekend in which they split matches, falling to the Gators, but returning on Sunday to drop South Carolina, 4-0. Earlier this year, the Bulldogs tripped the Commodores, 4-1 at the National Team Indoors in Madison, Wisc. “Georgia beat us at Indoors and I think this match should be an indicator of how much we have progressed,” said Macdonald. The matchup with Tennessee is set for 4:00 p.m. on Friday and the showdown with Georgia is scheduled to commence at Noon. |
