Mike Baxter Named SEC Player of the Week 4/4/2005 Vanderbilt junior first baseman Mike Baxter was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Baxter helped lead the Commodores to their first series win over #6 Ole Miss in eight years and a 3-1 record for the week. He batted .625 (10-16) in four games and went 8-12 vs. #6 Ole Miss for a .667 batting average. He drove in 10 runs, including four vs. Ole Miss in Game Two. He had a double in all but one game and was 1-2 in stolen bases. Baxter hit two home runs during the week including a three-run blast over right field that landed in the middle of 25th Avenue. That home run was featured on Sunday’s ESPN Sportscenter’s Xpress Clips and provided the winning margin (7-4). He now totals a career-high five home runs on the season. In the Ole Miss series, Baxter was 6-8 with runners on base and 3-5 with runners in scoring position. He advanced runners eight times in nine opportunities. He also recorded 16 putouts and three assists at first base. The White Stone, N.Y., leads the team in nine categories, including hits (38), batting average (.388), triples (3), doubles (9), home runs (5), runs (25), RBIs (26), walks (16) and stolen bases (13). |
