Menees, Lea Named Vanderbilt Nominees for McWhorter Scholarship 4/4/2005 SEC TO RELEASE McWHORTER POST-GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS IN CONJUNCTION WITH NATIONAL STUDENT-ATHLETE DAY BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Tennis player Ann Menees and football player Clark Lea have been nominated by Vanderbilt University for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship. The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league’s top male and female scholar-athletes. The Southeastern Conference will name the 2005 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on April 6 in conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day. Menees, a senior from St. Louis, Mo., has a 3.98 grade point average in Child Development and Cognitive Studies. She has been a Dean’s List student every semester of her college career (seven) and a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll for three seasons. In 2002-03, she was voted as Vanderbilt’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In 2003-04, she was named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team as voted by the College Sports Information Directors of America. She was also named a Scholar-Athlete by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and was voted SEC Tennis Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Athletically, Menees is serving as captain of the No. 4 rated Commodore tennis team this season. For the past two seasons, she has won the SEC Fall Flight B Singles Championship and was part of the SEC Fall Flight A Doubles Championship duo. Menees helped the Commodores to a Final Four finish in the NCAA Championships last season. In 2001-02, she was an All-SEC selection. Menees is a member of the Vanderbilt Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has been active in community service through the CHAMPS program at Vanderbilt. She has helped prepare meals at the Ronald McDonald House, participated in Kids’ Zone at Vanderbilt football games, worked on local school field day events, and visited with children at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. Lea, a senior from Nashville, has a 3.56 grade point average in political science. He has received Dean’s List honors and has been a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll for three years. He earned his undergraduate degree, Cum Laude, in May 2004 and is currently working on his master’s degree in political science. As a walk-on to the Vanderbilt football team, he played in 30 games during his career as a fullback and a special teams performer. He earned a full athletic scholarship prior to his senior year. He was a finalist for the John Wooden Cup, presented by Athletes for A Better World. The mission of ABW is to use sports to develop character, teamwork, and citizenship through commitment to an athletic Code for Living that applies to life, and to create a movement that will play a significant role in the transformation of individuals, sports, and society. He has also been on the Vanderbilt Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for two years and has also served as a youth baseball coach and has participated in local school read-a-thons. |
