VU Women Drop Alabama after Rain Delay 4/2/2005 The No. 7 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team captured its sixth SEC win of the season, toppling Alabama in Tuscaloosa, 6-1 on Friday night. The Commodores got on the board first by taking the doubles point from the Crimson Tide with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. VU’s tandem of Taka Bertrand and Amanda Fish tripped Alabama’s Ashley Bentley and Mari Muller in a tight, 8-6 contest. The Dores clinched the point at No. 3 where VU’s Annie Menees and Caroline Ferrell downed the Tide twosome of Melissa Minor and Andrea Brenes, 8-4. VU’s Fish earned the second Commodores point of the day at the second slot where she quickly dispatched of UA’s Bentley, 6-1, 6-0. VU took a 3-0 lead with freshman Taylor’s triumph at the No. 4 position. The Richland, Wash. native took care of Alabama’s Muller in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The Commodores clinched the matchup on the strength of Bertrand’s 11th victory at the third position. Bertrand outmatched UA’s Minor, 6-2, 6-2. Head Coach Geoff Macdonald’s Dores went on to matches at both Nos. 5 and 6 to earn a 6-1 win over the Crimson Tide. VU’s Menees and Ferrell captured wins at the fifth and sixth position while Vanderbilt’s No. 8 Falk fell to Alabama’s No. 7 Robin Stephenson in a third set super-tiebreaker, 10-7. Doubles Singles |
