3/31/2005

The No. 52 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team hosts its first weekend of SEC action on Friday and Sunday as they tangle with Alabama and Auburn.

“It’s about time,” said Interim Head Coach Eddie Coates.  “A home weekend couldn’t have come at a better time.  These guys are excited about it.  We need a win to keep our spirits up and get back on track.”

The No. 69 Crimson Tide visits Nashville on Friday with a 7-10, 0-6 mark thus far in the 2005 campaign.

Last week, Head Coach Billy Pate’s club knocked off Southern Miss but fell victim to both South Carolina and Florida over the weekend in Tuscaloosa.

The Commodores hope for a repeat performance of last year’s 5-2 triumph versus the Tide in Tuscaloosa.

The matchup is slated for 4:00 p.m. at the Currey Tennis Center.

Coates’ squad returns to action on Sunday to take on the No. 43 Auburn Tigers.

The Tigers are clutching an overall record of 10-5 and are currently on the hunt for their first conference win.

The Tigers feature the No. 10 doubles pairing of senior Gabor Zoltan Pelva and sophomore Alex Schweizer.  Zoltan Pelva is also holds a No. 70 singles ranking for the Tigers.

The tussle with the Tigers is slated for 1:00 p.m.

In last season’s SEC opener, the Commodores bounced No. 3 Florida, 5-2 at the Currey Tennis Center.
