VU Men Fall to Buckeyes, 4-3 3/23/2005 The No. 40 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 34 Ohio State at the Currey Tennis Center on a chilly Wednesday afternoon. The Buckeyes got on the board first, claiming a tight doubles point on Wednesday afternoon. Ohio State laid stake to the matchup at No. 3, where OSU’s Joey Atas and Drew Eberly dropped VU’s Matt Lockin and Ryan Preston, 8-5. At No. 1, VU’s Scott Brown and Jason Pinsky took the nation’s top ranked doubles team to the limit before falling 9-7. The Commodores got back in the match in a hurry with Commodore freshman Ryan Preston’s convincing win at the No. 5 slot. Preston took the first frame 6-3 and refused to look back, blanking Scott Green in the second to give the Dores their first point of the day. At the third position, Ohio State’s Chris Klingemann put the Buckeyes back on top with OSU pushed the lead to 3-1 with Drew Eberly’s triumph at No. 6. Vanderbilt’s Brown got the Dores back to within one with his straight set win at the No. 1 position over OSU’s Atas. At No. 4, Commodore sophomore Nathan Sachs rebounded from a first set defeat to take the next two and tie the match for the Dores at 3-3. All eyes focused on the showdown at the second slot where VU’s Pinsky battled Ohio State’s Devin Mullings. The VU rookie captured the first set 7-5, but Mullings stormed back to take the second, 6-1. In the third, Mullings pulled away, clinching the set and the matchup for the Buckeyes. The Dores return to their conference slate as they hit the road once again to take on Arkansas on Friday and LSU on Sunday. Doubles Singles |
