Vanderbilt Travels to Memphis for Quarterfinal Round of Postseason NIT

3/23/2005

Vanderbilt travels to Memphis for quarterfinal round action in the 2005 Postseason NIT Wednesday. The game will start at 9 p.m. CT and will televised by ESPN2.

The Commodores (20-13) are coming off a thrilling come-from-behind, 65-63, last second victory over Wichita State Monday in Nashville. Vanderbilt lost a 12-point second half lead and fell behind 50-46 with 4:40 remaining before last-second heroics saved the day. With the score tied at 63-63 and 0.7 seconds remaining, Jason Holwerda threw an in-bounds pass the length of the court, finding fellow senior Corey Smith alone for the layin to give Vanderbilt its 24th consecutive non-conference win at Memorial Gymnasium.

The last-second theatrics came following a career performance by Commodore junior guard Mario Moore who poured in 31 points while tying the school record for 3-pointers in a game with nine. Julian Terrell added 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Memphis (21-15) posted an 83-62 home victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday. Five Tigers scored in double figures led by Rodney Carney’s 17 points and Anthony Rice’s 16 points.

The winner advances to New York City for semifinal round action against the win-ner of St. Joseph’s-Texas A&M on March 29.

Vanderbilt leads the all-time series with Memphis 8-5. The Tigers won the last meeting, 65-56, in Memphis on Dec. 5, 1999. Commodore fans interested in attending Wednesday’s game in Memphis should call the Tigers’ Ticket Office at 901-525-1515.
