Vanderbilt Defeats Tennessee Tech, 4-2

Nashville, Tenn. — Senior right-hander Ryan Rote pitched two hitless innings and earned his 15th career save helping lead the No. 25 Vanderbilt Commodores to a 4-2 victory over Tennessee Tech in non-conference action Wednesday night at Hawkins Field.  Rote, in just his second year with the Commodores, tied the record held by Davis Daniels (1992-95) as VU’s all-time save leader.

Vanderbilt improves to 15-5, while Tennessee Tech is now 5-14.

Stephen Shao, who relieved starter Michael Wagner, earned his first win of the season pitching two innings giving up one hit and striking out two.  Wagner gave up one run on four hits and struck out three in the first two innings of the game.  Jeff Sues pitched the fifth and sixth innings giving up one run on three hits, while Cody Crowell pitched one inning striking out two and allowing one hit.

Brandon Bornstein went two innings and allowed three runs on three hits for his second loss of the season for the Golden Eagles.  Matthew Edwards went five innings allowing one run on five hits and Adam Cloar pitched the final inning giving up two hits.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead after the first inning.  With one away, Shaun Sheenan doubled to left center field and moved to third on a fly out to right field by Brandon Selvog.  Nathan Marty followed with a two out single RBI to left field scoring Sheenan.

Vanderbilt tied the game in the second when Bill Kleinschrodt scored on a Rucker Taylor single up the middle.  Kleinschrodt reached base on a single up the middle and stole second. 

The Commodores scored two more in the third for a 3-1 lead.  Mike Baxter reached on a bunt to the right side and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Tony Mansolino reached on a walk and he and Baxter advanced on a double steal.  With runners at second and third and no outs, Warner Jones took a 2-2 pitch off Edwards up the middle scoring Baxter and Mansolino.

The Golden Eagles cut the Commodores lead to one (3-2) in the sixth when Britt Clubb hit a RBI single to center field scoring Nathan Marty who reached on a single and advanced to second on a Bornstein ground out.

Vanderbilt answered with another run in their half of the inning.  With one away, Baxter doubled up the middle and stole third with Mansolino at bat.  Mansolino then hit a single to shallow left field scoring Baxter.

The Commodores totaled 10 hits led by Baxter, Mansolino and Jones with two apiece.  Tennessee Tech had nine hits, including a 3-4 performance by Marty.

Vanderbilt hosts Alabama this weekend in the SEC home-opening series.  The first game is Friday (March 25) at 6 pm.
