Memphis Knocks Off Vandy, 81-68

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) — Rodney Carney sure didn’t play like a reserve in this one.

Carney scored 26 points on 8-of-13 shooting off the bench as Memphis defeated Vanderbilt, 81-68, in the quarterfinals of the NIT.

Darius Washington added 23 points and seven assists for the Tigers (22-15), who will face St. Joseph’s in the NIT semifinals Tuesday at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Anthony Rice chipped in 11 points and Duan Erwin contributed 10 and 15 rebounds for Memphis, which shot 49 percent (24-of-49) and limited Vanderbilt to 39 percent (25-of-64).

The win may have been costly for the Tigers, however. Starting guard Jeremy Hunt played just 10 minutes before spraining a knee and did not return.

Shan Foster scored 25 points for the Commodores, whose bench was outscored by the Tigers’ reserves, 31-13. Vanderbilt was coming off Monday’s emotionally draining 65-63 home win over Wichita State.

Paced by a 12-of-13 effort from Washington, the Tigers connected on 28-of-33 free throws. Vanderbilt went just 9-of-14 from the line.
