VU Men Clash with Ohio State

3/22/2005

The No. 39 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team locks horns with the Ohio State Buckeyes Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at the Currey Tennis Center.

The showdown with the Buckeyes represents the Commodores first home contest in well over a month.  The last Commodore home showing came with a 5-2 VU win over then No. 49 Michigan.

“It will be good for our team to have fans supporting us,” said Interim Head Coach Eddie Coates.  “It seems like we’ve been on the road forever.  We are definitely excited to be back in a familiar environment, a place where we love to play.”

The Dores enter the match coming off a huge road win at No. 30 South Carolina.  The Commodores claimed the contest on the strength of VU freshman Ryan Preston’s clinching triumph at the No. 5 position.  Preston stormed back from a four-point deficit in the third set tiebreak to lay stake to the Commodore win.

The win improved the Dores to 9-4, 1-3 SEC.

The Buckeyes visit the Currey Tennis Center clutching a record of 7-5 along with a No. 18 ITA ranking.

OSU features No. 35 Joey Atas and No. 58 Devin Mullings at the top of their singles lineup.  In doubles, Head Coach Ty Tucker’s lineup showcases the No. 11 pairing of Drew Eberly and Ross Wilson.

In their last outing, the Buckeyes blanked Coastal Carolina 7-0 in Conway, S.C.

“They are strong team,” said Coates. “We lost a tough one to them last year at their place and that loss should give us some motivation for Wednesday.”

The contest is slated to commence at 3:00 p.m.

Free T-shirts will be given to the first 50 fans in attendance.
