No. 7 Hofstra Outduels No. 16 Vanderbilt, 10-8 3/20/2005 NASHVILLE — A 20-minute second half drought doomed the 16th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team Sunday in a 10-8 loss to seventh-ranked Hofstra at the VU Lacrosse Complex. Tied (5-5) at the halftime break, the Hofstra Pride scored the first four goals of the second half to build a lead that Vanderbilt was unable to overcome. Freshman Margie Curran led the Commodores with two goals and an assist, while sophomores Jennifer Tapscott (one goal, one assist) and Kendall Thrift (two goals) each had two points. For the Pride, Becky Thorn scored a hat trick, with Kim Hillier also amassing three points on two goals and an assist. The Commodores outshot the Pride, 28-23, but had trouble finding the back of the net, as Hofstra goalkeeper Maisie Osteen made 15 saves on the day. Her Vanderbilt counterpart, senior Ashley Bastinelli, made six stops between the pipes. In defense, sophomore Molly Frew had three caused turnovers and four ground balls for Vanderbilt. Hofstra’s Bridget Eder came up with four caused turnovers for the Pride. Hofstra scored the game’s first goal in the fifth minute, but Vanderbilt answered back with four goals, including two from Thrift, one from Tapscott and a fourth from freshman Meredith St. Lawrence. From there, the Pride would go on a four-goal run of their own to regain the lead, 5-4. A Curran goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in the half knotted the score at 5-5. Vanderbilt would not score again until the 50th minute, as Hofstra tallied four goals to open the second half, capping an 8-1 run. The final 10 minutes proved to not be enough time for Vanderbilt to mount a comeback, as each Hofstra possession burned precious time off the clock. Junior Bryn Sedlacek scored Vanderbilt’s first goal of the second half at 49:27, but Hofstra answered two minutes later. In the closing eight minutes, goals from Curran and junior Kate Hickman pulled Vanderbilt within two goals at 10-8, but the Dores would get no closer. Vanderbilt returns to action on Thursday, March 24, at 4 p.m., when the Duke Blue Devils visit the VU Lacrosse Complex. |
