Longhorns Drop Dores 3/20/2005 The No. 5 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team suffered its first non-conference defeat of the season on Sunday afternoon as No. 13 Texas stole a 4-3 win in Austin. In doubles action, Coach Geoff Macdonald’s crew claimed the point for the second time in as many days. The Commodores posted doubles wins at both the second and third positions. At No. 2, the No. 55 VU pairing of Taka Bertrand and Amanda Fish dropped UT’s Petra Dizdar and Mia Marovic, 8-6. The clinching win came at No. 3, where Caroline Ferrell and Annie Menees laid stake to their second doubles triumph of the weekend, 8-6. Texas squared the showdown at 1-1 with Kendra Strohm’s win over VU’s No. 53 Amanda Fish. The powers traded matches at No. 1 and No. 5 to even the matchup once again at 2-2. At No. 1, VU’s No. 14 Audra Falk toppled Texas’ Dizdar to improve her 2005 singles record to 14-2. The Longhorns broke the tie when Ristine Olsen took the decisive third set from VU’s Ferrell at the sixth slot. Vanderbilt’s No. 89 Bertrand got the Commodores back in the match with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 victory over UT’s Marovic. With the win, the Great Falls, Va. product amassed her 12th win of the 2005 campaign. Katie Ruckert clinched the matchup for Texas at the No. 4 slot, edging Vanderbilt’s Amanda Taylor in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. The Commodores hit the home courts of the Currey Tennis Center on Friday as they get back into their SEC schedule against Arkansas. The contest is set for 2:30 p.m. Doubles |
