Women’s Tennis Edges Baylor

3/19/2005

The No. 5 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team notched the doubles point and three singles wins to escape the Baylor Tennis Center with a 4-3 win on Saturday.

The Commodores swept the doubles draw for the fifth time this season as Vanderbilt Head Coach Geoff Macdonald shifted the doubles lineup to take the first point of the match against No. 17 Baylor.

The VU combination of senior Audra Falk and freshman Amanda Taylor meshed their talent for the first time en route to a convincing 8-2 victory over BU’s Daniela Covello and Zuzana Zemenova.

The Commodores clinched the all-important point with the newly matched tandem of senior Annie Menees and freshman Caroline Ferrell at the No. 3 position.

At the second slot, VU’s No. 55 combo of Taka Bertrand and Amanda Fish took hold of their 12th triumph of 2005, with an 8-6 win.

The Commodores quickly added to their lead in the singles draw with Bertrand’s “W” at the third slot.  The VU rookie dismantled her opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Baylor soon returned the favor, nabbing their first point of the day at the No. 4 position, where BU’s Zuzana Cerna handed VU’s Taylor just her third setback of 2005, 6-1, 6-3.

The Bears quickly evened the match with their victory at the sixth position.

VU’s No. 53 Fish pushed the Commodores to within one point of their 13th conquest of the year, tripping BU’s No. 69 Carolin Walter in straights, 6-3, 6-1.  With the win, Fish improves her 2005 singles mark to 13-2.

The Bears fought back to knot the match once again at 3-3 with their win at the fifth position.

For the second time in nine days, the Commodores laid their hopes of victory upon the racket of No. 14 Falk.

Falk dropped the first frame to Baylor’s No. 21 Zemenova, 6-3.  In the second stanza, VU’s veteran countered to take a 4-1 lead, but Zemenova battled her way into a tiebreaker.  In the breaker, Zemenova led 4-1, but Falk once again proved her worth, storming back in thrilling fashion to claim the breaker and the second set, 7-6 (5).

Falk carried her momentum into the third frame, toppling her opponent 6-3 and clinching the match for the Commodores, 4-3.

The Dores head south to Austin on Sunday for a date with the Texas Longhorns.  The match is scheduled for 12:15 p.m.
