Bowling Takes Two in Day One

3/19/2005

The Vanderbilt women’s bowling team knocked off both No. 4 Central Missouri State and Cheyney University in the first day of action at the Music City Classic.

In downing both CMS and Cheyney (PA) on Saturday, Head Coach John Williamson’s Commodores grabbed two matches in the same day for the first time in the young history of the program.

“It’s big, especially when you can beat a team like Central Missouri,” said Williamson.   “That’s got to be the highlight of the year so far.  It’s a year in the making.  We have worked long and hard and we wouldn’t have been able to do that a month ago.  We are moving forward.”

The first pair of matches on the day saw the Dores fall to Southern University and reigning national champion Nebraska.

The Commodores rebounded in their third showdown of the Classic against No. 4 Central Missouri State.  With a solid crowd behind them, the Dores hurled over 800 to drop the Jennies in a thriller, 821-793.

Against the Jennies, VU’s Christine Luce rolled a stellar 210.  Luce averaged 176 on Saturday and amassed a total pinfall of 879.  Luce’s counterpart Jennifer Redmond also recorded a big day for the Dores, throwing a 173 against CMS and averaging 165.

The Commodores carried their momentum into their last matchup against the Cheyney Wolves.

Against the Wolves, VU combined to toss 760, which proved to be more than enough as the Dores outlasted Cheyney by more than 200 pins, 760-525.

The Dores return to action tomorrow as they look to improve their status for Sunday’s championship draw.  The action is schedule to begin at 9:00 a.m.

“We have very competitive games tomorrow and we have the opportunity to finish the season on a positive note,” said Williamson.

Nebraska currently holds the No. 1 slot in the tourney with a perfect 4-0 record.
