NASHVILLE – The Vanderbilt lacrosse team dropped a 13-6 decision to American Lacrosse Conference rival Johns Hopkins Friday at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex. The 12th-ranked Bluejays outscored the 16th-ranked Commodores, 8-3, in the second half of the match to pull away for the win.

Lauren Schwarzmann of Hopkins led all scorers with four points. Schwarzmann scored the game’s first three goals, and the Commodores were never able to even the score. Vanderbilt was led by junior captain Kate Hickman, who tallied a pair of goals on the day.

The Bluejays outshot Vanderbilt, 35-19, but the Dores were kept in the game by the play of senior goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli, who totaled 14 saves on the day. Her counterpart, Lauren Riddick, made seven saves for the Bluejays against only six goals allowed.

Johns Hopkins held Vanderbilt scoreless for the game’s first 12 minutes while opening a 3-0 lead as Schwarzmann netted an early hat trick. The Commodores got on the board at 12:39 when freshman Margie Curran scored an unassisted goal.

The teams traded goal over the final 15 minutes of the first half, with Hickman and sophomore Jennifer Tapscott scoring for Vanderbilt, while Meagan Voight and Mary Key notched goals for Hopkins. The Bluejays held a 5-3 lead at the break.

In the second half, Vanderbilt again got within a goal as senior Meg Spies scored her fourth goal of the season. But Hopkins answered with three goals as Sarah Walsh, Kelley Putnam and Anne Crisafulli stretched the Bluejay lead to 8-4 in the 38th minute.

A second Hickman goal, her 10th of the year, was met by another trio of Bluejay scores. In the 51st minute, sophomore Kendall Thrift would score Vanderbilt sixth, and final, goal. Hopkins added two more tallies in the final nine minutes to take the 13-6 win.

Freshman Michele Slotke led the Commodores with four ground balls, while defenders Molly Frew and Sasha Cielak each caused a pair of turnovers. For Hopkins, midfielders Cherie Michaud and Kelley Putnam had four ground balls each, with Putnam also causing two turnovers.

With the loss, the Commodores drop to 2-2 on the year. They will have to rebound quickly, however, as the seventh-ranked Hofstra Pride are scheduled to visit the VU Lacrosse Complex on Sunday, March 20, at Noon CT.
