Vanderbilt Defeats Murray State, 5-2

Nashville, Tenn. — Sophomore right-hander Michael Wagner came on in relief and gave up just one hit in 3.1 innings to help lead the #17 Vanderbilt Commodores to a 5-2 victory over Murray State Wednesday at Hawkins Field.  Five Commodore pitchers saw action in the contest and allowed just two hits, walked six and struck out 11.

The Commodores are now 13-3, while Murray State is 10-7.  Jake Ociesa picked up the loss for the ‘Breds giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits.  He walked three and struck out six.

Vanderbilt scored two runs in the first when Antoan Richardson crossed home after a wild pitch.  Richardson reached on a walk, moved to second on a Warner Jones single and stole third.  Jones scored when Brian Hernandez hit a single up the middle. 

Murray State tied the game in the second without getting a hit off VU starter sophomore left-hander Greg Moviel.  Alex Stewart walked and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Tyler Pittman walked placing runners at first and second.  Dustin Hennigar reached on a fielder’s choice and every one advanced on an error by Jones.  With bases loaded, Michael Perconte grounded out to first base scoring Stewart.  Seth Hudson drew a walk to load the bases again and Chaz Ebert hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Pittman.  After giving up his fifth walk, Wagner replaced Moviel on the mound.  Moviel went 1.2 innings and did not allow a hit, but gave up two runs (one earned) and struck out one.

Vanderbilt added three more runs in the fourth inning for a three-run lead.  Mike Baxter singled to right and moved to second when Hernandez drew a walk.  With one away, Baxter moved to third on a wild pitch and Hernandez stole second.  With Dominic De La Osa at the plate, the Commodores executed a double steal with Hernandez moving to third and Baxter stealing home.  Hernandez scored when Bill Kleinschrodt singled to right field.

Freshman left-hander David Price went 2.0 innings giving up one hit and striking out three; redshirt freshman left-hander Cody Crowell went 1.0 inning and struck out two, while Rote face three batters striking out two.

Vanderbilt had five hits, includine one each from Baxter, Hernandez, Tony Mansolino, Kleinschrodt and Jones.  Jones’ single in the second inning was his 200th career hit.

Vanderbilt opens Southeastern Conference action this weekend with a three-game series at Mississippi State.
