Men’s Golfers to Hall of Fame Tourney 3/16/2005 HOUSTON – Vanderbilt’s men’s golf team takes its new-found momentum into this weekend’s Hall of Fame Invitational. The Commodores will be tested against a strong field and a very competitive golf course. “We are going into this tournament with some momentum,” says Head Coach Press McPhaul. “It’s been a while since we’ve felt we have played close to our potential but we began to get that feeling at the Seminole Intercollegiate.” McPhaul is referring to Vanderbilt’s strong second place finish nearly two weeks ago in Tallahassee. The Black and Gold had the best final day score in the field to out-distance a number of strong teams. “There were two primary reasons in my opinion why our play has improved,” McPhaul reasons. “First, the Seminole Intercollegiate was our second event of the spring. We had moments while we were in Southern California when we played well but we hadn’t had a tournament round in several months and couldn’t keep it together. “Secondly, and most importantly, is the fact that our five men had been very consistent in their work ethic and attitude and they were due success. Simply put, they played well because they worked hard for two months.” McPhaul will take the same quintet that played in Florida; Luke List, Brett Lange, Mark Donnell, Dos Goldsmith and Will Armstrong. The sophomore List led the team in Florida with an even-par 216 score. The Commodores have received some early scouting assistance from former Vanderbilt first-team All-American Brandt Snedeker, who played Hall of Fame’s difficult Redstone Golf Club as a professional at the Shell Houston Open last summer. “Brandt has told us to expect a long and challenging course,” McPhaul says. Redlands is a 7,508-yard, par 72 Jacobsen Hardy Course nestled in a wooded oasis surrounded by five acres of natural wetlands, lakes and native wildlife. With its strategic bunkering, manicured fairways and smooth greens, the course offers an excellent test of golf. The team leaves Wednesday for a Thursday practice round. The tournament will consist of 18 holes Friday through Sunday.
