Bowling Hosts First Tourney

The Vanderbilt bowling squad is set to play host this weekend to the inaugural Columbia 300 Music City Classic, held on Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20 at Melrose Lanes in Nashville.

“We are excited,” said Vanderbilt Head Coach John Williamson.  “It will be fun to be able to bowl in a tournament at home.  The teams that are coming have combined to form a strong field.  This tournament will do a lot to show Nashville what collegiate bowling is all about.”

The Classic consists of an eight-team field that showcases some of the nation’s top collegiate talent.

The squads contending for the title along with the Commodores include Alabama A&M, Arkansas State, national runner-up Central Missoui State, Cheyney University, Minnesota State-Mankato, national champion Nebraska and Southern University.

The Music City Classic represents the final tournament of the Commodores first season as a varsity sport on the Vanderbilt campus.

“I expect our team to compete,” said Williamson.  “We know what to expect.  Our players are realizing what it takes to win and what it takes to be successful.  We are getting closer to our ultimate goal of winning a tournament.”

The teams will compete in five round-robin traditional games on both Saturday and Sunday, with a seeded draw for the championship following Sunday’s pool play.

The action gets underway this Saturday, March 19, beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Day two is slated to commence on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
