No. 31 Gamecocks Down No. 5 Vanderbilt, 5-2 3/13/2005 The No. 31 South Carolina Gamecocks handed the No. 5 Vanderbilt Commodores their first SEC defeat of the 2005 campaign, 5-2 at the Currey Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. In doubles action, the Gamecocks got the best of the Commodores on all three courts. At the No. 1 slot, USC’s duo of Danielle Wiggins and Magda Wojdylo tripped VU’s No. 21 senior pairing of Audra Falk and Annie Menees, 8-2. The Gamecocks captured the doubles point at the third position, where the South Carolina tandem of Laura Ganzer and Fallon Koon dropped Vanderbilt’s Caroline Ferrell and Amanda Taylor by the same 8-2 tally. The Commodores evened the score in the singles draw with Fish’s victory at the third position. The VU sophomore knocked off USC’s Ganzer in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The Dores took their only lead of the day when VU’s No. 14 Falk dropped USC’s Wiggins in convincing fashion, 7-5, 6-2. With the win, Falk improves her 2005 record to an impressive 12-2 at the No. 1 singles position. The Commodore lead did not hold long as the Gamecocks stormed back to take the four remaining matches at Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 6. At Nos. 4 and 6, the Commodores stole the first sets, but Ferrell (No. 6) and Taylor (No. 4) both fell third set tiebreaks. The loss moves the Commodores to 12-2 overall, 3-1 SEC. With the win, South Carolina improves to 7-3, 2-2 SEC. The Dores return to action next weekend as they travel to the Lone Star State to take on Baylor on Saturday and Texas on Sunday. |
