Lacrosse Slides Past Yale, 8-7 3/12/2005 The Vanderbilt lacrosse team registered its second consecutive win Saturday, an 8-7 victory over Yale in New Haven, Conn. Freshman Margie Curran led the Commodore attack with three goals, while sophomores Jennifer Tapscott and Kendall Thrift each contributed three points to the effort. Senior goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli made 12 saves behind the Commodore defense, allowing only seven goals on the afternoon. Only two goals were scored in the first 30 minutes of the match. Curran opened the scoring in the third minute with an unassisted tally. Yale’s Alessandra Croffy answered 10 minutes later, and the game was tied at 1-1 going into the halftime break. Vanderbilt’s attack awoke early in the second half, scoring three goals in the period’s first four minutes. Juniors Bryn Sedlacek and Kate Hickman notched the first two goals, with Tapscott adding a third to make VU’s lead 4-1. The Bulldogs would strike in the 37th minute, but goals from Curran and Tapscott a mere 30 seconds apart, and both assisted by Thrift, extended the Commodores’ lead to 6-2. Yale found the back of the net three times in the next eight minutes to pull within one, but Vanderbilt tightened up and was able to score a pair of insurance goals from Curran and Thrift. Late in the game, the Bulldogs tried to mount a rally. Yale came within a goal at 8-7, but the Commodore defense would not be broken. Caused turnovers from freshmen Sasha Cielak and Curran sealed the one-goal victory for Vanderbilt, its second in as many games. Cielak and senior Kim Gianis led the Commodore defense in ground balls and caused turnovers, while Vanderbilt claimed nine of the game’s 17 draws. The Dores (2-1, 0-1) return to action on Friday, March 18, when American Lacrosse Conference rival Johns Hopkins visits the VU Lacrosse Complex. |
