Baylor’s Mike Pankratz Hits Grand Slam in 13th Inning

Nashville, Tenn. –  Baylor’s Mike Pankratz hit a grand slam in the top of the 13th inning to break a 3-3 tie and lead the Bears to a 9-4 win over Vanderbilt Friday at Hawkins Field.  With the loss, Vanderbilt’s nation-leading 12-game win streak came to an end.  Senior right-hander Ryan Rote, who entered the game in the ninth inning, picked up the loss, while Abe Woody earned the win for the Bears.

In the 13th inning, Baylor’s Zach Dillon led off with a double to right center field and moved to third on a fielder’s choice sacrifice bunt by Kevin Sevigny.  Sevingy moved to second on a wild pitch and Kevin Russo was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs.  Freshman left-hander Cameron Betourne relieved Rote and Baylor’s Pankratz took a 1-1 pitch over the centerfield wall for the grand slam and four-run lead.  It was the first home run the Commodore pitching staff has given up this season.  Paul Witt followed that with a single to second and moved to third when Chase Gerdes doubled down the right field line.  Witt scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Griffin and Gerdes scored on s single by Josh Ford for the six-run inning and 9-3 lead.

“We had a couple of base running blunders and we didn’t play catch,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin said.  “I like the way we battled back, but we didn’t do enough offensively.  The game got out of hand on one pitch.”

Down 3-1 in the eighth inning, Vanderbilt scored two runs to tie the game at 3-3.  Freshman designated hitter Alex Feinberg led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved to third on junior second baseman Warner Jones’ double to left field.  With two away, junior catcher Brian Hernandez drove in Feinberg and Jones with a single to right field.

The Bears took a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning when they scored two runs off starter Jensen Lewis.  With two away,  Dillon doubled to left center field and scored when Reid Brees doubled down the left field line.  Russo followed with a single to center and moved to second on an error by Vanderbilt centerfielder Antoan Richardson which allowed Brees to score.  Freshman left-hander David Price relieved Lewis and retired the side after giving up a walk.

David Price came in and shut them down and Brian Hernandez came up huge with two RBI with two outs,” Lewis said following the game.

Vanderbilt scored first in the second inning when freshman shortstop Dominic De La Osa’s sacrifice fly brought home junior first baseman Mike Baxter.

The Commodores totaled eight hits, two each by Hernandez and Jones.
