The No. 5 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team looks to hand No. 2 Florida its first SEC defeat of the season on Friday afternoon when the two powers come together at the Currey Tennis Center at 2:30 p.m.

The Commodores are currently riding the sails of a seven match winning streak, as well as owning 11 of its last 12 outings. 

This past weekend, the Commodores opened their SEC slate in style with victories over No. 64 Ole Miss and No. 52 Mississippi State.  The Dores downed both squads by a 6-1 tally.

Overall, Head Coach Geoff Macdonald’s crew posts an imposing singles record of 57-13, with four Commodores posting 10 wins or better. 

The University of Florida comes to town clutching a No. 2 ranking and 6-0 record.  UF opened the SEC season taking their first pair of matches, blanking both No. 50 Arkansas and No. 43 LSU.

The Gators are the defending SEC regular season champions and are led by a trio of seasoned upperclassmen in senior Zerene Reyes and juniors Boglarka Berecz and Jennifer Magley. 

Interestingly, the last regular season loss for the Gators came at the hands of the Commodores on March 16, 2003.  The Dores outlasted the Gators on its home turf, 4-3.

On Sunday, the Commodores continue their SEC season against the No. 31 Gamecocks of South Carolina.

Currently, the Gamecocks hold a spring record of 6-2 and are set to meet Kentucky on Friday before making their Sunday swing to West End. 

South Carolina split on its opening conference weekend, knocking off Arkansas in impressive fashion, 6-1, but falling to LSU, 4-3.

In their last outing, the Gamecocks dropped their showdown with BYU, 4-3 in Columbia.  The lone USC win came at the No. 3 position, where USC’s Christyn Lucas tripped her opponent in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The Dores hit the courts with Florida on Friday at 2:30 p.m.  The Commodores return to face the Gamecocks on Sunday at Noon.
