Nashville, Tenn. –  The #8 Commodores are 11-0 for the first time in school history after a rain-shortened 8-3 victory over Oakland Monday at Hawkins Field.  The game was called in the top of the eighth inning following a 44-minute rain delay.

Sophomore right-hander Michael Wagner went 5.0 innings for the Commodores giving up two runs on four hits in his first win of the season.  He struck out seven and walked two.  Sophomore left-hander Greg Moviel pitched 2.0 innings giving up one run (unearned) on one hit facing nine batters before the game was halted.

Vanderbilt had 14 hits led by Warner Jones (3-4), Mike Baxter (3-3) and Dominic De La Osa (3-4) who each had three.  Brian Hernandez had two hits, including his first home run of the season – a three-run shot over right centerfield.

Oakland took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ty Herriott hit an RBI double to right centerfield scoring Kyle Crepeau who singled and stole second.  Vanderbilt tied the game in their half of the inning when Baxter’s triple drove in Jones who reached on a single and stole second.

The Commodores added one run in the third inning for a 2-1 lead when Baxter drove in Jones again.  Jones reached on a single to left field, stole second and then moved to third when the attempt to catch Jones stealing rolled to the outfield.  Baxter hit a shot to right field for his second RBI of the game.

Vanderbilt added six runs in the fourth inning.  De La Osa led off with a single through the left side and moved to second on a catching error on Oakland’s first baseman (Heath).

Carter Hawkins, who started his first collegiate game at catcher, grounded out but moved De La Osa to third.  Matt Zeller singled up the middle scoring De La Osa for a 3-1 Commodore lead.  With two away, Aaron Garza hit a blooper that landed behind the pitcher moving Zeller to second.  Jones then doubled to left field scoring Garza and Zeller.  Jones stole third and Baxter was hit by a pitch.  Hernandez stepped up to the plate with runners at first and third and hit the three-run home run for an 8-1 Vanderbilt lead.

The Grizzlies added one in the fifth inning when Will Tollison hit an RBI single scoring Kurt Rosenacker who led off the inning with a walk.  Oakland scored its final run in the sixth inning.  With Greg Moviel on the mound for the Commodores, Matt Bloom led off the inning with a single to the right side and moved to second on a Chad Winkle ground out.  Bloom scored on a throwing error by third baseman Tony Mansolino before Bryan DeLamielleur grounded out to Moviel. Moviel had a full count on Bloom, who was the first batter in the top of the eighth inning, when the umpire stopped the game.

Vanderbilt stole four bases in the contest, led by Jones with three.  The Commodores host Lipscomb Tuesday (March 8) at 4 pm at Hawkins Field.  Vanderbilt defeated the Bisons last week, 9-3 at Dugan Field.
