No. 6 VU Women Nab Second SEC Win 3/6/2005 The No. 6 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team captured the doubles point and five singles matches to overpower No. 52 Mississippi State 6-1 at the Currey Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Commodores got on the board first, taking a pair of doubles matches on Sunday. The No. 54 pairing freshman Taka Bertrand and sophomore Amanda Fish dropped MSU’s tandem of Polina Kokokoulina and Magdi Rekasi 8-4 to grab the first match of the day for the Commodores at the No. 2 position. The Bulldogs countered the Commodore triumph at the No. 2 position, with a win of their own at No. 1. The No. 32 MSU combo of Zsuzsanna Fodor and Anastasia Kokoulina knocked off VU’s No. 33 duo of seniors Audra Falk and Annie Menees, 8-5. The all-important doubles point rested squarely on the shoulders of a pair of VU freshman. At the No. 3 doubles position, VU’s twosome of Caroline Ferrell and Amanda Taylor battled the MSU sister tandem of Hayley and Tarryn Rudman. The Dores fell behind early, 2-3, but regrouped to knot the match at 6-6. The Commodores reeled off the next two games to take the match and secure the doubles point. The Commodores earned their second point of the day at the No. 2 position, where VU’s No. 62 Fish improved to 10-2 on the season, with a 6-0, 6-1 lashing of MSU’s Anastasia Kugakolova. VU’s Bertrand brought Head Coach Geoff Macdonald’s club to within one win of clinching the match as she dropped MSU’s Tarryn Rudman in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The Commodores clinched the match with Taylor’s win at the No. 4 position. The VU freshman snagged her 11th win of the season with a 6-4, 6-2 straight set defeat over MSU’s Kokoulina. Vanderbilt’s Menees joined her teammates in the win column on Sunday, posting a 6-2, 7-5 straight set victory of her own. The win moves the seniors mark at the No. 5 position to an impressive 6-1. At No. 1, VU’s Falk tangles with MSU’s Fodor. The Bulldogs grabbed the first set, but Falk battled her way back to steal the second, 6-4. Falk claimed the match for the Dores in the super-tiebreaker, 10-6. The lone defeat on the day came at the No. 6 position, where State’s Renee Joseph dropped VU’s Julie Martin, 6-4, 6-3. With the win, Vanderbilt moves to 11-1, (2-0 SEC), while MSU falls to 6-2, (0-2 SEC). The Commodores look to grab two more conference victories as it plays host to Florida on Friday and South Carolina on Sunday. Doubles Singles |
