VU Women Open SEC Play with 6-1 Win 3/4/2005 The No. 6 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team opened its SEC schedule garnering the doubles point and five singles matches as they claimed their first conference win against No. 64 Ole Miss. “I thought we did a wonderful job against a seasoned Ole Miss squad,” said Vanderbilt Head Coach Geoff Macdonald. “It’s great to start off with a win in this conference.” The Commodores (10-1, 1-0 SEC) continued their impressive spring doubles play, taking two of the three matchups. The Commodores claimed their first match of the day at the No. 2 position, where VU’s No. 54 combo of Taka Bertrand and Amanda Fish cruised past the Ole Miss tandem of Ilona Somers and Mimi Renaudin, 8-0. The victory improves Bertrand and Fish’s 2005 mark to 9-2. The clinching Vanderbilt match came at No. 3. The VU twosome of Caroline Ferrell and Amanda Taylor garnered their 10th match of the season in impressive fashion, tripping the Rebels tandem of Nika Koukhartchouk and Preethi Subramanian, 8-3. VU’s Ferrell was first of the courts for the second week in a row in the singles draw, blanking Ole Miss’ Sarah Sabin in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. The triumph improves Ferrell’s singles record to a stellar 10-1. The third Commodore point registered on Friday came by way of VU’s No. 29 Falk at No. 1 singles. The VU senior knocked off her seventh ranked opponent of 2005 with a 6-2, 6-3 lashing of Ole Miss’ No. 34 Carlotti. The Dores clinched the matchup with the Rebels with Bertrand’s win at the No. 3 position. Bertrand defeated UM’s No. 94 Koukhartchouk in straight’s, 6-3, 7-5. The win was Bertrand’s second victory over a ranked opponent in 2005. At the No. 4 position, VU’s Taylor captured her tenth singles win of 2005, with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over UM’s Renaudin. With wins in both the singles and doubles draw, Taylor pushes her combined record to an imposing 20-2. The Dores also grabbed a strong victory at No. 2, where VU’s Fish notched her ninth win of the season, 6-4, 7-6 (4). With the win, the Commodores notched their first victory of the SEC season, while registering their eighth win in nine attempts over a ranked opponent. Coach Macdonald’s Dores continue their homestand Sunday as battle the No. 52 Bulldogs of Mississippi State. The showdown is set to get underway at Noon. Fans, don’t forget to come out for Kids Day on Sunday which benefits the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. Coach Macdonald and the Commodores will host a free clinic for all children in attendance after the match. Fans are encouraged to bring a children’s DVD to give to the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
