VU Falls to Ole Miss in Oxford 3/4/2005 The No. 31 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team dropped its first SEC contest of 2005 to the No. 5 Ole Miss Rebels on Friday afternoon. The Rebels tripped the Dores, 7-0. Ole Miss got off to a solid start in the match, taking the doubles with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. UM’s Fredrik Aarum and Erling Tveit dominated the VU pairing of Evan Dufaux and Ryan Preston at No. 2, 8-2. With the No. 1 match all square, UM freshmen Bram ten Berge and Jakob Klaeson finished off the Commodore duo of Matt Lockin and Jordan Magarik 8-4 at No. 3 to clinch the point. In the singles draw, the No. 5 Rebels proved too tough on their home courts, taking all six singles contests. At the No. 1 position, VU’s No. 40 Scott Brown faced off against UM’s No. 4 Catalin Gard. Brown hung tough against the UM senior, dropping a hard-fought first set, 6-4 and falling in the second frame, 6-3. A pair of Commodores took their foes to third set super-tiebreakers, but neither Lockin at No. 2 or Preston at No. 4 could squeeze out a victory. Lockin fell 10-7 in the super breaker, while Preston dropped a 10-3 decision. “Ole Miss is definitely one of the best teams we have to face all year,” said VU Interim Head Coach Eddie Coates. “It was a packed house and it was a great experience for us. It was our first outdoor match and we knew it was going to be tough. It will take some time for us to get acclimated to being outside. I did think that (Matt) Lockin and (Ryan) Preston played really well for us.” The Commodores look to rebound quickly as they take the courts in Starkville on Sunday against the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. The matchup is slated for 1:00 p.m. “We need to go down to Starkville and get a win on Sunday to get back on track,” said Coates. Doubles Singles |
