VU Men Register Eighth Win

2/27/2005

The No. 17 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team garnered the doubles point along with three singles wins en route to a 4-2 victory Sunday versus No. 55 Indiana in Bloomington.

The Commodore pairing of senior Scott Brown and freshman Jason Pinsky continued their winning ways, overpowering the Hoosier combination of Ryan Recht and John Stone to take the matchup at No. 1 doubles, 8-5.  The win improves the twosome’s 2005 mark to a perfect 9-0.

The battle for the deciding Commodore point came down to a pair of tiebreakers.

At the No. 2 slot, the Dores pushed the Hoosiers to the limit, but fell in the decisive breaker, 9-8 (2).

The all-important doubles point came down to the matchup at No. 3.  The Commodore tandem of Matt Lockin and Jordan Magarik battled the Indiana combo of Michael McCarthy and Dara McLoughlin into another intense tiebreaker.  In the breaker, the Dores proved too tough, capturing the matchup and doubles point, 9-8 (6).

The Commodores needed every bit of their momentum from doubles play in the singles draw on Saturday.

Lockin was the Commodores representative at the No. 1 position for the first time this season.  His match with Jakub Praibis extended into the third frame, which Praibis claimed 6-0 to give the Hoosiers their first point of the day.  The defeat was Lockin’s first of 2005.

At No. 2, VU’s No. 40 Brown made quick work of  IU’s Recht, dispatching the Hoosier in convincing fashion, 6-4, 6-0.  Brown moves his 2005 singles record to 8-1.

The Commodore rookies once again proved their worth in the second road match of their young careers.

VU’s Ryan Preston chalked up the third Commodore point of the day at the No. 4 position, defeating IU’s McCarthy in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.  Preston’s win increased the Commodores lead to 3-1.  The victory was also Preston’s eighth win in nine tries.

VU needed one more point to secure the victory.

Jason Pinsky provided just what the Commodores needed.

The VU freshman was pitted against IU’s Neil Kenner at the No. 3 position.  Kenner claimed the first set, but Pinsky fought back to take the second frame, 6-3.  The Potomac, Md. native went on to claim the match for the Commodores with a 6-3 win in the third.

With the win, the Commodores improve to 8-1 overall in 2005 play.

The Dores return to action on March 4 when they open the SEC season in Oxford, Miss. to take on the Ole Miss Rebels.  The action is set to get underway at 2:00 p.m.
