No. 17 Men Face BigTen Foes 2/25/2005 The No. 17 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team boards the bus for the first time in 2005 as they head to both Purdue and Indiana this weekend. The first test for the Commodores comes by way of the Boilermakers in West Lafayette on Saturday. Currently, Coach Tim Madden’s bunch is ranked No. 73 and clutches an overall record of 1-3. On Saturday, the Commodores look to hand Purdue their first home loss of 2005. In previous action the Boilermakers swept Butler at home, but fell on a recent road swing to Ball State, North Carolina, and North Carolina State. Last season, the Dores tripped the Boilermakers in Nashville, 7-0. VU faces a quick turnaround following its showdown with the Boilermakers as they head to Bloomington Sunday to face No. 55 Indiana. The Hoosiers have faced six ranked opponents in 2005, posting a 3-4 record overall. In their last outing, IU garnered its most impressive win of the year over No. 26 Louisville at home, 5-2. In the victory, the Hoosiers claimed two-of-three matches in the doubles draw and also grabbed four wins in the singles bracket. The Commodores enter the weekend’s festivities with a spotless spring record. Thus far, the Dores are 7-0 with their last win coming two weeks ago versus No. 49 Michigan, 5-2. The Dores are led by seniors Scott Brown and Matt Lockin. Combined, the pair is 14-0 in singles play and 13-1 in the doubles draw. Combined, the Dores run an imposing spring singles record of 38-4. “Purdue and Indiana are always good teams with good chemistry,” said VU Head Coach Ken Flach. “They play good doubles and are more aggressive serve and volleyers. It’s always tough to win on the road.” The Commodores are set to take on Purdue Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and travel to Bloomington Sunday for a date with the Hoosiers at Noon. “These two matches are the first road matches for a lot of these guys and I hope we come out with two wins,” said Flach. |
