Commodores Clash with Yellow Jackets 2/24/2005 The No. 6 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team looks to hold serve Saturday as they take on No. 23 Georgia Tech at Noon at the Currey Tennis Center. The talented Yellow Jackets make their visit to West End clutching an impressive 5-1 record. Much like the Dores, the Jackets have traveled a tough road thus far in 2005, facing five ranked squads in six matches. In those bouts, Tech posts impressive home wins over Baylor, Alabama, and Rice. The lone defeat on the year comes at the hands of No. 18 Harvard. The Crimson notched the doubles point as well as four singles matches to down Tech 5-2 in Atlanta. The match with the Commodores will be Tech’s second showdown outside of Atlanta. Coach Geoff Macdonald’s crew meets the Yellow Jackets Saturday on a hot streak of their own, capturing three straight wins and eight of their last nine. In their last outing, the Dores stormed out of the gates against in-state rival MTSU, sweeping the doubles point and claiming all six singles matches. The Commodores continue their impressive play in the singles draw, running a record of 41-11 in 2005. The Dores are led in wins by a pair of freshman in Caroline Ferrell and Amanda Taylor. Both Ferrell and Taylor post stellar 8-1 singles records and while teaming up to post an 8-1 doubles record as well. “I am very pleased with how they (Ferrell and Taylor) have responded to the rigors of college tennis with such composure and aplomb,” said Vanderbilt Head Coach Geoff Macdonald. At the No. 1 singles position, Commodore senior and No. 29 Audra Falk owns a 7-2 mark in 2005. With her latest win against MTSU, Falk garnered the 60th dual-match win of her career. Fellow senior Annie Menees has notched four consecutive victories at the No. 5 position, where the Commodores as a whole have posted a perfect 8-0 record. In last season’s contest the Dores traveled to Atlanta and dropped Tech, 6-1. “Georgia Tech is really good this year,” said Macdonald. “It’s always a great matchup when we play them and I am really looking forward to it.” The matchup with Georgia Tech is slated for Noon at the Currey Tennis Center. |
