Dores Sweep Blue Raiders 7-0 2/22/2005 The No. 6 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team refused to surrender a set to the Blue Raiders on Tuesday afternoon en route to a 7-0 victory at the Currey Tennis Center. The Commodores swept the Blue Raiders in Tuesday’s doubles action. At the No. 2 position, Taka Bertrand and Amanda Fish cruised past MTSU’s Ana Maria Cibils and Emily Vest, 8-0. The VU duo’s victory was their seventh of 2005. The Dores sealed the doubles point at No. 3, where the freshman combination of Caroline Ferrell and Amanda Taylor garnered their sixth consecutive win. The tandem knocked off the Blue Raider duo of Jaqui Williams and Claudia Szabo, 8-4. Coach Geoff Macdonald’s crew also took the match at No. 1, where a Commodore pairing reeled off seven consecutive games for the second straight match. This time seniors Audra Falk and Annie Menees completed the feat, winning 8-4. The Dores carried their doubles momentum into perhaps their strongest singles showing of 2005. First off the courts for the Commodores was senior Falk. VU’s No. 29 made quick work of MTSU’s Klaschka, dropping her opponent in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-1. VU’s Bertrand continued her impressive play in her first year, claiming the third Commodore point on the afternoon with her win over the Blue Raider’s Cibils in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. VU’s Taylor soon followed her freshman counterpart to the locker room, capturing the clincher in straights, 6-0, 6-2. With the clinching win, Taylor moves her collegiate record to an impressive 8-1. The Dores chalked up their fifth point of the day with Fish’s “W” at No. 2. Fish surrendered one game to her opponent en route to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. The victory was the VU sophomore’s 35th triumph in a Vanderbilt uniform. The Commodores also laid stake to impressive wins at both the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. At Nos. 5 and 6, Menees and Ferrell both dropped their opponents in straight sets. In the singles draw as a whole, the Dores surrendered a mere 11 games to the Blue Raiders. “I thought we did a great job focusing tonight,” said Macdonald. “We respected our opponents and really played well. We know this is a great rivalry.” With the victory over MTSU, the Dores move to 8-1 in the 2005 campaign. Next up for the Commodores is a matchup with No. 23 Georgia Tech at the Currey Tennis Center on Saturday. The showdown is slated to begin at Noon. Doubles Singles |
