Thomas, Earley Too Much for Florida as Vandy Holds On, 76-69

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Carla Thomas and Ashley Earley combined for 44 points and 17 rebounds and No. 20 Vanderbilt (19-6, 8-4 SEC) made 10 straight free throws in the last 2:39 as the Commodores held off Florida, 76-69, Sunday afternoon at the O’Connell Center.

Thomas scored a game-high 23 points while Earley posted her 11th double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds. 

Dee Davis chipped in 12 points including going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line as the Commodores completed the season sweep. Vandy finished the game shooting 50.9 percent from the field while shooting 90 percent (18-20) from the foul line. Florida was led by Tamia Williams with a team-high 22 points. Williams connected on 5-of-7 three-pointers. Bernice Mosby added 12 points. Florida shot 44.6 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point range.

Vandy’s 1-2 punch in the post gave the Gators problems. Thomas scored 15-of-her 23 points in the first half while Earley scored 15-of-her 21 points in the second half.

Florida trailed 55-41 with 12:47 remaining after Earley got loose for a lay-up. Vandy led 60-49 after a free throw from Earley with eight minutes to play. The Gators then used a 10-2 run to pull within 62-59. Sarah Lowe hit a three-pointer and Tashia Morehead added two baskets. Lowe finished off a steal with lay-up and a free throw completing a three-point play pulling the Gators within 62-59 with 5:11 to go. Thomas and Abi Ramsey each hit back-to-back baskets putting the Commodores ahead, 66-59, with 3:13 left.

The Gators chopped their deficit to 72-69 after two free throws from Lowe, but Davis and Thomas combined for the final four points of the game sealing the win for Vanderbilt.

Thomas scored 15 points in the first half and the Commodores shot 51.6 percent in the half as the Commodores led. Florida shot 46.2 percent in the half but committed eight turnovers.

Florida led 6-2 before a basket from Earley tied the game, 6-6. The Commodores led 18-12 after a basket from Thomas with 11:46 left in the first half. Vandy led 25-14 after Caroline Williams hit a three-pointer and Thomas added a jumper stretching its lead with 9:02 left before half.

Williams and Tashia Morehead hit back-to-back three-pointers pulling Florida within, 39-31 at halftime.

Ramsey finished the game with eight points and needs just 14 points to become the 25th player in VU history to score 1,000 points. Williams added six points. Morehead had 11 points for Gators.

Vanderbilt returns home for its final regular season home game Thursday against Alabama. The Commodores will celebrate Senior Day as Earley and Ramsey will play their final game in Memorial Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
