No. 18 VU Nabs Win Over No. 49 Michigan

2/13/2005

The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team knocked off its first nationally ranked opponent on Sunday, dropping Michigan 5-2 at the Currey Tennis Center.

Coach Ken Flach’s Dores rebounded quickly from yesterday’s doubles point defeat to sweep the Wolverines in the draw on Sunday.

At the No. 1 slot, VU’s No. 39 pairing of senior Scott Brown and freshman Jason Pinsky upset the nation’s No. 17 tandem of UM’s Ryan Heller and Brian Hung to take the first point for the Dores, 8-6.  The Commodore pair runs their record to a stellar 7-0 mark in the 2005 campaign.

The Dores claimed the doubles point with Andy Mack and Ryan Preston’s impressive 8-4 triumph over the Wolverine pairing of Michael Rubin and Matko Maravic.

VU also nabbed the third doubles match at No. 3 with Matt Lockin and Jordan Magarik’s marathon outing against Michigan’s Vinny Gossain and Steven Peretz.  The match lasted nearly an hour and a half, with VU prevailing in an intense tiebreaker, 9-8 (6).

In the singles draw, the Commodores proved their worth, netting four more victories.

First off the courts for the Dores was Lockin.  The Vanderbilt senior grabbed his first win against a ranked opponent this year, upsetting Michigan’s No. 70 Brian Hung in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

“Lately I have been struggling with my knee,” said Lockin.  “I think beating a ranked player for the first time this year will really help my confidence.”

Brown would follow his senior counterpart to the locker room, dispatching Michigan’s Rubin in convincing sets, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 position.

The Commodore seniors run their combined singles record in 2005 to an imposing 14-0.

The matchup at No. 5 featured Vanderbilt’s Preston and Michigan’s David Anving.  The pair would battle back and forth in the first frame, eventually heading to a tiebreak, knotted up at 6-6.  VU’s freshman took the tiebreak in convincing fashion, 7-2.  Anving was unable to recover in the second, as Preston claimed the set and the match, 7-6, 6-2 to clinch the win for the Commodores.

The Wolverines claimed their first point of the day at No. 4, where Ryan Heller defeated VU’s Andy Mack, 7-6 (4), 6-4.  The loss was Mack’s first in 2005.

Freshman standout Pinsky grabbed the fifth Commodore point on Sunday, downing UM’s Matko Maravic in a grueling three-set triumph at the No. 3 position.  Pinsky grabbed his sixth “W” of the season, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-2.
Michigan notched their second and final win of the day at No. 6, where Steven Peretz downed VU’s Jordan Magarik in a third set tiebreaker.

“I thought we really did a good job today,” said Flach.  “We were really strong in doubles and that was important after our sluggish start yesterday.  I was very happy with our intensity today.  We pulled out a couple of tiebreakers and I think today was another step forward for our team.”

Next up for Coach Flach’s club is a pair of matchups against BigTen foes Purdue and Indiana on Feb. 26, 27.

First up for the Dores are the Boilermakers in West Lafayette on Feb. 26.  The showdown is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
