No. 18 Dores Defeat Paladins

2/12/2005

The No. 18 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team dropped its first doubles point of 2005, but roared back to take all six singles matches Saturday afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center.

The Commodores nabbed the first win of the doubles draw with VU’s Scott Brown and Jason Pinsky claiming their matchup with Furman’s Allen Simmons and Andy Sobczyk.  The No. 39 Commodore pairing never trailed against the Paladin twosome, taking the match, 8-5.

Furman quickly countered the Commodore triumph at the No. 2 position, where Furman’s Ben Pauluhn and Greg Maarchalk broke the Dores to open the match.  The Commodores would stage a comeback, breaking back to even the showdown at 4-4.    The Dores took the lead 7-6, but the Paladins would prevail, taking their first win of the day, 9-7.

The all-important doubles point would come down to the match at the No. 3 position.  VU’s combination of Matt Lockin and Jordan Magarik was matched up with Furman’s Kevin Lackey and Scott Kahler.  The pairs traded games until the match headed to the tiebreak, knotted up at 8-8.    The Paladins captured the first two points of the breaker and never looked back, capturing the doubles point, 9-8.

Coach Ken Flach’s pack headed to singles looking to answer the Furman point, needing four-of-six singles victories for the win.

Vanderbilt’s Preston would be the first to answer the wake up call, dropping his opponent in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Preston’s freshman counterpart Pinsky nabbed his fifth victory of 2005 at the No. 3 singles position, bouncing Furman’s Maarchalk in straights for the second Commodore point of the day.

The showdown at No. 1 pitted VU’s No. 17 Brown against Furman’s Simmons.  Brown claimed the first frame in convincing fashion, 6-2.  The Vanderbilt senior transferred his momentum into a 6-4 second set win.  Brown’s “W” brought the Dores to within one point of victory.

The No. 5 position featured a three-set thriller between VU’s Mack and Furman’s Brennan Phippen.  Mack laid stake to the first set 6-1, but Phippen refused to back down, claiming the second frame to move to a third set.

Mack would outlast Brennan in the third stanza to clinch the match for the Commodores, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

VU’s Lockin and Magarik both got in the win column for the Commodores at Nos. 2 and 6 for points five and six.  Lockin took his match in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, while Magarik claimed a 7-5, 6-3 victory.

With the win, the Dores move to 6-0 in 2005, with a matchup against No. 49 Michigan on Sunday.  The showdown with the Wolverines is set to begin at Noon at the Currey Tennis Center.
