Thomas Leads Commodores In Double Overtime Thriller Box Score STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Carla Thomas had a career-high 33 points and 17 rebounds and Vanderbilt (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 21 AP) overcame Tan White’s 47-point game to beat Mississippi State 106-98 in double overtime on Thursday night. White scored 16 points in overtime to finish with the high-scoring game of the season in Division I women’s basketball. The leading scorer in the nation, she surpassed her previous best of 33 points set in January 2004 against Kentucky. Vanderbilt (16-5, 5-3 Southeastern Conference) opened the second overtime with a 9-3 run, and sophomore Dee Davis was 3-of-4 from the line in the final minute to wrap up the Commodores’ third straight victory. Mississippi State (14-7, 3-5) blew an eight-point lead in the first overtime en route to its fourth straight loss. The Bulldogs are 1-6 following a 13-2 start. Ashley Earley added 22 points and 16 rebounds for Vandy, which outrebounded Mississippi State 58-25. Davis finished with 15 points, Caroline Williams had nine of her 12 in the first overtime and Abi Ramsey added 10 for the Commodores. Thomas’ layup with 1.4 seconds left tied it at 95 and sent it into a second overtime. Vanderbilt then took control in the second overtime, outscoring the Bulldogs 11-3. Tianna Burns scored 22 points for the Bulldogs, and Mamie McKinney added 16. |
