Vanderbilt Tussles With No. 6 Kentucky Saturday At Memorial Gymnasium NASHVILLE — Vanderbilt searches for its third consecutive Southeastern Conference victory Saturday when No. 6 Kentucky visits Memorial Gymnasium for a 2 p.m. CT contest televised by Jefferson Pilot Sports. Game Notes The Commodores have won an SEC-best 27 of 30 home games since the beginning of last season, including 12 of 13 contests during the 2004-05 campaign. Vanderbilt (13-8, 4-4 SEC) is coming off a 67-62 win and series sweep of in-state rival Tennessee Wednesday. Alex Gordon became only the fourth freshman Commodore to score 30 or more points in a game (since the 1972-73 season) when he tallied 30 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field. Gordon, in only his second career start, hit 5-of-7 3-pointers and was 9-of-11 from the foul line. Senior Corey Smith, who leads Vanderbilt in scoring since the middle of December (13.3 ppg), posted 19 points and six rebounds against the Volunteers. Kentucky (16-2, 7-0 SEC) has rested all week since winning a 68-67 nail-biter at Arkansas last Saturday. Junior forward Kelenna Azubuike led the Wildcats with 13 points and six rebounds against the Razorbacks. He leads UK, averaging 14.6 points this season. Kentucky won the first meeting earlier this season, 69-54, on Jan. 12 in Lexington. Freshman Rajon Rando led UK with a career-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Smith led Vanderbilt with 16 points in the loss. The Commodores won the last meeting in Nashville, a 66-60 decision on Jan. 31, 2004. |
