2/4/2005 The No. 19 Vanderbilt men’s tennis squad aims for a perfect 5-0 mark on Sunday, when they take on in-state rival Tennessee Tech at the Currey Tennis Center. In the Commodores previous four matches of 2005, Coach Ken Flach’s group has surrendered a mere two singles matches to their opponents. With a 6-1 triumph over the Memphis Tigers in their last outing, the Dores ran their mark as a team to 26-2 in both singles and doubles play. The senior duo of No. 17 Scott Brown and No. 113 Matt Lockin lead the Dores by example, posting a combined mark of 8-0 at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions as well as maintaining perfect doubles marks. Sophomore transfer Andy Mack maintains a spotless record in his first year in the Black and Gold. The Plano, Tex. native clutches a 4-0 record in singles while playing both No. 4 and No. 5, along with a 3-0 record in doubles going into Sunday. In their last three matches, the Commodores also own a 3-0 record at the No. 6 position thanks to sophomore Jordan Magarik. The Winchester, Va. product has not lost in the doubles draw either, chalking up a 4-0 mark with partners Lockin and Ryan Preston. The Commodores have proved themselves thus far in the season as strong doubles team, refusing to drop a match in 2005. The Dores currently own a 12-0 mark in doubles action. The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles make their visit to the friendly confines of the Currey Tennis Center on Sunday with a record of 0-2. The 2005 Golden Eagles are a young squad, with two juniors and six freshmen making up the eight-man lineup. Coach Aldrin Campos’ lineup has its final test before visiting the Music City when they take on the No. 4 Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday in Oxford. The No. 19 Commodores look to keep their spotless home record intact as they take on Tech at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. We’re coming off four strong matches,” said Flach. I hope that we as a team can sustain that level of play and not let up. We must take every match seriously.” |
