Does a great basketball game get your blood up?
You can do more than holler to support the Vanderbilt Commodores as the women’s basketball team issues its blood challenge against UT’s Lady Vols. You can give your blood.

Visit the VU-UT Blood Challenge blood drives between February 7 through 10 at the blood center on Charlotte Avenue, on campus at Branscomb Quadrangle, or at the Medical Center February 9 and vote with your veins.
“These teams have a long and strong competitive history,” said Patricia A. Callicoat, CEO of the Red Cross’ blood services. “Vanderbilt is playing hard. It’s the fans’ turn to show how hard they can work for a win. The fans can have fun and hospital patients can live to enjoy another game.”
It’s the fourth year of the Blood Challenge and Vanderbilt is ready for the trophy to be in Nashville. Last year the ‘Dores’ fans came within 30 pints of claiming it. This the year the blood drives are just before the teams meet in Knoxville February 13 for their second match of the season. Fans can claim a limited edition shirt to wear to the game.

Fans supporting the Challenge will help a near-emergency situation. Levels of O- blood have hovered below a one-day supply for weeks. Additionally B- and A- have been dangerously low.Blood products have been shipped in from other parts of the country. All blood types are needed.

“It’s dangerous to have the supply be so short,” said Callicoat. “If an emergency required vast quantities of blood on a moment’s notice we would not be able to deliver. We are asking Vanderbilt fans and everyone eligible to come in now.”

Most of the population is eligible to give blood. The minimum weight is 110 lbs. The minimum age is 17. There is no maximum age limit. Questions about medical conditions that could cause a deferral can be answered by calling 327-8571.
