1/20/2005 The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team looks for a pair of wins this weekend as both Belmont and UNC-Greensboro make a visit to the Currey Tennis Center in the Dores’ first tests of 2005. Head Coach Ken Flach’s crew is ranked No. 20 overall and returns five from last year’s squad that posted an impressive Elite Eight finish at the NCAA Championships. The Dores are led by remarkable duo of seniors in Scott Brown and Matt Lockin. Brown enters the 2005 campaign ranked No. 17 by the ITA. In 2003-2004, Brown went 27-12 in singles play overall, while compiling an 8-3 mark in conference. Lockin posted an equally impressive 26-10 singles record and currently holds a No. 113 national ranking. Both Lockin and Brown were named second-team All-SEC for their efforts in their junior year. The new-look Commodores feature a slew of skilled underclassmen with four sophomores and two freshmen. The Dores first matchup of the day comes in the form of intra-city rival and Atlantic Sun Conference member Belmont. The Bruins visit the Currey Center coming off a successful 2003-04 season in which they went 10-6 overall and 3-2 in A-Sun play. The Bruins feature Brazilian Felipe Lima at the No. 1 position. Lima totaled a 10-3 mark in dual play and was a first-team all-conference selection. The second dose of the doubleheader pits the Commodores against the Spartans of UNC-Greensboro. The Southern Conference school posted a 3-5 league mark last season and looks to turn the tables in 2005. “We can’t take these teams lightly,” said Flach. “It is a great opportunity to figure our lineup and see where we stand in doubles play.” The battle with the Bruins begins at 11:00 a.m. Saturday and is followed at 3:00 p.m. as the Dores square off against the Spartans. The Dores also will hit the courts on Sunday to take on the Mocs of Chattanooga. It will be the first dual match of the spring season for UTC. The match is set to commence at 1:00 p.m. at the Currey Tennis Center. |
