Commodores Josie Hahn, Luke List Named Tennessee Amateur Athletes of the Year

1/19/2005

Two of Vanderbilt’s most dynamic student-athletes, track and field multi-event star Josie Hahn and golf standout Luke List, have been named Tennessee’s Female and Male Amateur Athlete of the Year, respectively.

Hahn, a senior from Clinton, Tenn., and List, a sophomore who prepped at Baylor High School in Chattanooga, will be honored at the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and Awards Dinner scheduled Friday, Feb. 18, at the Renaissance Hotel in Nashville.

The awards to Hahn and List mark the first time that two Vanderbilt student-athletes have swept the male and female amateur honors presented by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. Only seven former Commodore student-athletes have been recognized since the award began in 1968.

Hahn’s remarkable 2004 campaign included a Southeastern Conference individual championship, two All-America honors, five new school records and participation in the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials.  List’s reached superior achievements on the golf course in front of a national television audience, earning a spot in the upcoming Masters Invitational and United States Open by finishing second at the 104th United States Amateur.

“I was really surprised, but I’ve thrilled and honored to receive such a prestigious award,” Hahn said. “It was great to win the Vanderbilt award  (female athlete of the year) last year, but it’s so special to be representing the whole state.”

“Obviously, it means so much to win this award, especially with all the wonderful athletes there are in Tennessee.  There are so many people to thank, from my parents and grandparents to my coaches.  I’m truly honored, especially to follow in Brandt’s (Snedeker) footsteps,” List said. Snedeker, a former Vanderbilt All-American, won the award last year.

List’s coach at Vanderbilt, Press McPhaul, watched his star pupil become a Third-Team All-American and First Team All-Southeastern Conference selection in his first year on the Commodore campus.  Last summer, he also enjoyed List’s remarkable U.S. Amateur runner-up performance at the famed Winged Foot Golf Course in New York.

“We are tremendously proud of Luke.  He is no doubt a very deserving recipient,” McPhaul said. “To tell you the truth, Luke is a better person than he is a player.  He always represents Vanderbilt University in great fashion.”

Hahn, who stands less than 5’6″, distinguished herself as a high jumper and multi-event standout. In 2004, she broke Commodore high jump marks in five separate competitions, extending both indoor and outdoor school records to 6’0″.  She also set new records in the multi-event pentathlon and heptathlon, and used a fifth school record in the javelin to earn the SEC individual heptathlon title.

“Josie is just remarkable, and so deserving of this honor,” Vanderbilt track and field head coach Lori Shepard said.  “Josie is remarkably talented, but quite unique size wise in her premier events.  But what she lacks in size, she makes it up in heart.”

Previously, the following seven Vanderbilt student-athletes have been recognized as either Male or Female Amateur Athlete of the Year by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame:
