Vanderbilt Bowlers Make Headway at Southern Invitational

1/16/2005

The new Vanderbilt women’s bowling team concluded it’s run in the Southern Invitational Sunday night and are still in search of their first win of the young season.

Coach John Williamson’s squad faced off against five of the top 10 teams in the nation during its stay in Baton Rouge.

“We have a ways to go,” said Williamson. “I felt that Jessica Tower bowled well today, and I think that Jennifer Redmond and Christine Luce bowled well all weekend. We are improving.”

In the second match of the day, the Commodores looked to prove to the bowling community that they are, in fact, improving. The Dores would face national power Bethune Cookman, but would fall to the No. 6 team in the land by a score of 782-657.

The Dores 657 overall output against Bethune Cookman would not be their highest on the day. Vanderbilt would post a 671 in its closest match on the final day, but Prairie View would answer and pull away, chalking up a 739 overall score.

“We are close to getting over the hump,” said Williamson. “We are working hard, but we’re not there yet.”

The next opportunity for the Commodores comes at Central Missouri State on January 21, in Warrensburg, Mo.

Bowling Comes Up Short in Quest for First Victory

The Vanderbilt women’s bowling team dropped all five matches in the first day of action at the Southern Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.

The Commodores most competitive match in the short history of the program came by way of the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff. The Dores would drop the match by just 38 pins, falling to the Golden Lions 688-650.

“We bowled much better today that we had in our previous tournament,” said Head Coach John Williamson. “We are still very young and inconsistent, but we are on the verge of becoming more successful.”

On the day, junior Jennifer Redmond and sophomore Christine Luce paced the Commodores. Redmond averaged 156 and had a high game of 195, while Luce averaged 157 and hurled a high game of 192.

The squad’s highest posting of the day came against the Pioneers of Sacred Heart where the Dores chalked up a total of 722. They would drop the match 1066-722. Sacred Heart bowler Erin Gore came one pin short of a perfect game against the Commodores. Her total of 299 came by way of 11 consecutive strikes.

“We had opportunities to score well today and we just couldn’t do it,” said Williamson. “We must begin to the little things, like converting our spares and hitting the pocket. We must improve.”

The Commodores look to regroup as they hit the lanes for the second and final day of competition at the Southern Invitational. Coach Williamson’s group will face four opponents on Sunday beginning at 9:00 a.m. Opponents include Fairleigh Dickinson, Bethune Cookman, Morgan State, and Florida A&M.
