Commodores Head To Southern Invitational 1/13/2005
Commodores Head To Southern Invitational Vanderbilt’s newest varsity sport looks to make history as the Commodore Bowling team heads to the Southern Invitational in Baton Rouge, La. First year Head Coach John Williamson’s crew is in search of its first win for the young program. “The first win is huge. Winning makes everything more fun,” said Williamson. “The girls have been working hard and talking about the importance of getting a first win and I believe they definitely deserve it.” In its last two outings, the Commodore lineup gained some much needed experience, facing 1999 and 2001 National Champion Nebraska as well as fellow collegiate bowling newcomer Minnesota State. “The Minnesota State tournament was big for us. It showed us what an NCAA tournament event was like,” said Williamson. “The level of both competition and skill was incredible. It showed us where we need to go as a program to compete at the top levels of intercollegiate bowling.” The Southern University Lady Jaguars bowling team will host the tournament. Matches are slated to commence on Saturday and conclude on Sunday. Around 20 teams will visit Baton Rouge for the weekend festivities. “This tournament should give us a good chance to be successful. There are younger programs just like ours in this tournament and I feel we can be competitive,” said Williamson.
