Two Commodores Bound for the “Big Easy” to Take Part in the Annual SEC Indoor Championships

Vanderbilt seniors Scott Brown and Matt Lockin aim to get the Commodore Men’s Tennis team off to a solid start in 2005 as they head off to New Orleans on Thursday to compete at the SEC Indoors.

“The SEC Indoors is a great tournament where all 12 schools send their best players. Both Scott and Matt are good indoor players” said Head Coach Ken Flach. “We have won this tournament three out of the last four years and hopefully Scott and Matt can keep that going. They are definitely contenders.”

Chad Harris and Zach Dailey, seniors during the spring of 2004, split the singles title last season, a year after former Dore Bobby Reynolds had captured the individual crown.

The senior duo of Brown and Lockin is poised to get the Dores’ back to the Elite Eight for the second year in a row. For their efforts in 2003-04 season, in which the Commodores posted an overall record of 17-12 during the spring, Brown and Lockin were named to the All-SEC Second Team.

Combined, the tandem went 17-5 in SEC play during the spring of 2004. Overall, Brown posted an imposing record of 10-2 at the No. 2 singles position, while Lockin matched Brown with a record of 10-2 at the No. 3 singles position.

Brown, seeded fourth by the conference, will face Ricardo Gonzales of Georgia at 1 p.m. CT on Friday, Jan. 14. Lockin takes on LSU’s Mark Growcott at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

The two will team up in the doubles draw to face Stefan Tell and Greg Oullette of Florida at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Flach’s team enters 2005 with a No. 20 ranking as given by the ITA. Vanderbilt is one of six SEC squads to be ranked in the top 20 by the ITA.

The tourney begins on Thursday and runs through Sunday. Updates will be available at http://www.vucommodores.com
