Vanderbilt Travels To Knoxville Seeking Seventh Consecutive Win 1/7/2005
Vanderbilt Travels To Knoxville Seeking Seventh Consecutive Win Game Notes Coming off an undefeated six-game homestand, Vanderbilt travels to in-state rival Tennessee Saturday in search of its seventh consecutive victory. The game starts at 3 p.m. CT and will be televised by CBS Sports. The Commodores (10-4, 1-0 SEC) are coming off an impressive 70-56 topping of No. 19 Alabama Wednesday. Jason Holwerda and Mario Moore tallied 16 points each as Vanderbilt hit 12 3-pointers and outrebounded the Crimson Tide 41-25. It marked the sixth consecutive time a VU opponent was held under 40 percent shooting and the eighth time in 14 games the Commodores have made 10 or more 3-pointers. Tennessee (8-5, 1-0 SEC) also won its SEC opener Wednesday, defeating Georgia 72-65 in Athens. Four Volunteers scored in double figures led by C.J. Watson’s 17 points. UT has won four of its last five games. Both teams shoot the ball well. Tennessee ranks third in the league, shooting 47.5 percent from the field. Vanderbilt is fifth at 47.5 percent. The Commodores rank second in the SEC in 3-point shooting at 42.8 percent. The Volunteers are third at 41.8 percent. Vanderbilt is looking to start the season 2-0 in league play for the first time since the 1989-90 season when the Commodores started 3-0. That season, Vanderbilt finished 21-14 overall, 7-11 in the SEC and won the NIT championship. While a win Saturday would mark VU’s first win away from Memorial Gymnasium this season, it would also give the Commodores’ their third SEC road win in the last four games dating back to last year. Tennessee leads the overall series 102-63. The two teams split a pair of meetings last season with each team winning at home. |
